Editor in Chief, 2007
The Daily Californian Editors’ Blog was launched
In the past, it has been Daily Cal policy not to comment on matters such as our reporting and story-planning process. However, we understand that journalism is always evolving, and it was important and necessary for our organization to better address reader concerns and questions, especially in a time when the journalism industry is undergoing such major changes.
Our solution was to create the Editors’ Blog, in which the Editor in Chief of the Daily Cal would write a weekly column concentrating on issues surrounding our newspaper and in the journalism industry in general. There would also be updates during the week as topics arise. In September 2007, the blog was expanded so that all editors could post. We hope a blog format gives readers the most efficient way to communicate with us. The organization felt strongly that increased transparency would translate into more accountability and better coverage.
All stories we publish go through an extensive budgeting and editing process. Still, many decisions (for example, how much coverage we give to a particular issue) can still be subjective. It is the fun part of our jobs, and a responsibility we all take very seriously.
The information box on the second page of every Daily Cal reads: “The Daily Californian strives for accuracy and fairness in the reporting of news.” The organization has a responsibility to the public to demonstrate we strictly adhere to these guidelines for every item we publish in print and online.
Because we understand many editorial decisions can be made in different ways, the purpose of this site is not to defend our practices, but rather to create discussion on how our processes may differ from other publications or how they can be improved.
